Friedman Research Corporation has developed finite element analysis approaches leading to testing certification of aircraft seating.  Our focus of analysis has included biofidelity of dummy responses and calibration responses, in-flight entertainment design to minimize occupant injury, and failure points in seat structures.

Biofidelity Research

Our research focuses on the conditions between dummy responses under impact conditions and the probability of serious human injuries. As biofidelity improves the difference in dummy response to restraint measures is an important variant in interpreting human response. We use the most recent evolution of dummies to provide accurate prediction of human response.

Development Approaches

We use a building block approach including the design of models that use accurate material properties of each element in the component models.  After the testing of each component, models are tested with integrated components, then finally validated with fully tested subsystems. The  validated model is proven to comply with government dummy calibration requirements.

In-Flight Entertainment (IFE)

We have developed specialized testing equipment to determine the best design for the monitor integrated into the seatback.  This design minimizes head and neck  injury measures while significantly improving the accuracy obtained from 3 and 4 point bend tests.

Glass Testing

Advanced Glazing Systems testing, design and simulation.  Our advanced technology evaluating brittle structures ensures accurate response measures with finite element simulation system performance.  Glazing has been evaluated for occupant retention, head impact protection, aircraft seats, military and armored vehicle applications.

Aircraft Seat Research

We conduct structural seat testing using finite element analysis under impact loads. This allows for the identification of failure points in seat structure prior to physical testing. Important considerations in aircraft seat testing are: the effect of friction between head and seatback and in-flight entertainment monitors on the results of FAA sled  certification tests.

Monitor Impact Integration

We have developed specialized testing equipment to determine the best design for the monitor integrated into the seatback.  This design minimizes head and neck  injury measures while significantly improving the accuracy of 3 and 4 point bend tests.
